Today is the tenth birthday(!!!) of the game that brought terms like
"deathmatch," "gib," and "suck it down" into our vernacular. I
definitely need to round up some of my mutant buddies to make sure we
have some updated version of DOOM installed to celebrate the occasion.
Last one with a telefrag is a rotten egg!

Heady days indeed. Frags for the memories, Doom.

I can still "walkthough" the firt level in my minds eye, The little sludge covered barrels - the monster waving their arms in the air (like they just don't care...) the predicatble situation where you see health and ammo sitting right next to eachother but know that there's a nasty monster either side around a corner...

How could it get any betta?

Quake.

*sniffle* Thank you John Carmack.

hehehe - yep yep.
Actually, a couple of the guys from Troopers and I have been playing some co-op recently. Talk about a blast.. and it's easy to forget just how nuts some levels are/were.
Can't remember any recent games where you're all SCREAMING and laughing at the top of your lungs in the face of absurdly brilliant level design and seemingly overwhelming odds..

ahhh. :-)

Oh.. and the amount of times (even given the fact we THOUGHT we remembered every level) we were just scratching our heads trying to figure out how the hell to progress through the level.. wickedly brilliant puzzles.

It's quite good on the Game Boy Advance as well :) it kept me ammused for ages while on the plane to Italy.

Much better then watching 'The Animal' movie which seeemed to be played every 3rd film.

I remember reading the review of DOOM in APC and thinking this was a cool game. I got it and was right. I played it on 14.4k modem with a friend as well. It was one of the greats.

Modem - Luxury!!! We used to dream of havin' a modem.

Decay, Grumbler and I used to play over serial cable (a pre-lan lan-day - I guess you would call it a serial-day). Of course Decay had to go on the end because he was the only mouse user at the time.
We used to spend until the wee small hours just getting it to run (well Grumbler did while Decay and I watched RAGE), start with a little deathmatch and then play co-op until the sun came up or someone's system crashed, which ever came first.
Oh and how our x386's and x486's crawled when you had half a dozen Cacodemon's (puffballs) shooting in all directions.
The graphics may be showing their age but the maps and gameplay still beat most of today's current games. I must dig it up and have a go at it again.

I've never actually played DOOM in multiplayer/lan. my only experiance with this game was a backward step in gaming. (I didn't get my first PC til a few years ago..) However, i can't knock it or ride it off in any way, it is after all /one/ of the games which paved the way for the games we love today.
So, kudos to DOOM for many years of fun, albeit thru your decendants :-)
