Which Way Did He Go?!? |
[ September 04, 2003 ] |
I was looking at those in positions of authority the other day, and I discovered something rather odd: we use the term "leader" liberally, but we really mean "pusher". These people don't lead, in that we don't follow (they seem to go together, somehow), instead they push, and prod. They issue commands on what we must do; they channel us down the paths they want, as farmers do with sheep.
I wonder when this change from leader to pusher came about, and I wonder why it hasn't been recognised and given the level of respect it deserves: Team Pusher, Chief Operating Pusher, General Pusher. Surely these are better titles!
(Somehow I just had the image of a cavalry with a bloke at the back, running up and down a line of horse mounted men, saying "Off you go then. That way, go get them", while the riders look at each other and wonder what to do. )
There is a bright side, however, and that is that it makes the decision process that much easier.... there is none. You just follow the path laid out. (This method was verified by some very bored scientists, who discovered that rats made their way through a maze much quicker if there was only one way to go, and if they kept pushing them along every time they stopped to sniff the walls, or each other.)
So here's to a future of no decisions, no forks in the road, no need to think, just keep walking forward with the certainty that if you stop, someone will run up and prod you until you are moving again.
