Graduate Recruitment

Have you ever applied for a graduate position online?? Had such a MONDAY of a time trying to apply for one...aargh, need to vent.

Yep, so Em has halfheartedly decided to apply for a few Graduate positions, seeing as she will be a graduate sometime soon(eek!! Must face the Real World..and I don't mean the tv show) and may need some income. Something apart from The House of K, that is.

As I am not an Accounting or Economics major, and most jobs are in that field, I'm kinda just applying for organisations that look interesting, with no real rhyme or reason,or no real career in mind even!! Yes, I know that beggars can't be choosers, and I should be applying for everything in sight, but well, I am not yet motivated enough to. Actually, I can't see myself working in that sort of environment at all...but let's not go there.

So I've been applying for a few government organisations, and had started to apply for the Victorian Public Service(just because), but then didn't finish the application forms off before the due date. Then a friend told me that they had extended their due date until Monday, so I thought 'Why not?' and went about finishing that off. Most of them have at least 5 pages worth of stuff that you need to fill out, ranging from Previous Work Exp, Referees, Uni Marks, Extracurricular Activities and the delightful 'We ask you lotsa questions and please say something extremely pertinent about why you wanna work here and why we should hire u.'

Eg. "Please provide an example of when you have used your academic or technical knowledge to solve a problem" and "Please describe an occasion where you have been required to adapt to changes beyond your control. Include your approach and outcome" all in no more than 200 words. Then these buggers wanted me to work out my average uni marks across all years of my degree as well as an overall average...imagine, asking ME to do Maths?? THEN, to top that off, they also wanted you to attach your academic transcript and your Resume.

Um, isn't this whole thing basically my Resume?? And scanning in my academic transcripts turned into a headache and a half when the file sizes were too big to load into the computer, causing me to scan in a b&w copy, which was also too big, so then I hacked the b&w copy into parts and scanned them in individually and pasted them into one thingy. But due to my careless scanning, they'd come up crooked and I didn't have the technical know-how to fix that, and wasn't gonna scan them again so I had this delightfully crooked, home-made looking academic record, which didn't look like it had been tampered with in any way at all!! Actually, if I had tampered with it, I would have given myself better marks, so that would have been a dead giveaway.

HR Person 1: 'I think this candidate has forged an academic transcript, look at the way the document is not properly aligned and the writing is cut off'
HR Person 2: 'But the marks on it are rather bad and she has failed more than one subject'
HR 1: 'Yes, I see your point. We don't want amateurs like her working here at the Victorian Public Service. You are the Weakest Link, Goodbye!!'

And thus would end what could have been an illustrious career. Anyway, to cut a long story short, by the time it was all ready to send off to the recruiters, well, for some reason my internet line was 'Busy' and I spent half an hour dialing to no avail before I had to rush off to do some paid work(yes, someone actually wants my expertise as a tutor!!)...so no application sent!! What's with the 'Busy' signal?!?! Never ever had that before, the one day I urgently need the internet to meet a deadline, it freakin' stuffs up. Thanks a lot. Bloody Hell.

I am consoling myself with the fact that the VPS wanted a minimum 70% average at uni, which I discovered I do not have!! Eeeek!! Just under unfortunately.

Serves me right for leaving it until the last minute. And I hate Murphy and his stupid laws. But thanks for letting me start the healing process through cyberspace. You've been a great audience. This has been my first 'Rant', as I am usually easygoing and not the type to get fussed!!

As a matter of interest (well, interesting to me, anyway), what is your degree.. Which loosely equates to "What jobs are you applying for/do you want?"

Nice rant, by the way.

My Degree is Commerce/Arts, my majors are Sociology and Marketing. Go firgure who'd want a sociologist marketer working for them?? Looking for something possibly related to Marketing without having to sell my soul too muchly, hence the Sociology influence...

I'd like to work somewhere where they want me for the fact that I have a degree, regardless of what it's in, then learn stuff on the job.

Is there such a place?? And that's after passing all those darned interviews and aptitude tests...
